Today I am on thinking about being on my own.  I am single by choice.  Though I love company I am also happy in my own company. Being SOLITARY is a choice. Even when people are around you can still make space for yourself through meditation or you can just go for a walk.

Here come the quotes

“Being solitary is being alone well: being alone luxuriously immersed in doings of your own choice, aware of the fullness of your won presence rather than of the absence of others. Because solitude is an achievement.”

Alice Koller (American Writer – Unknown Woman)

“Greatness lies, not in being strong, but in the right using of strength; and strength is not used rightly when it serves only to carry a man above his fellows for his own solitary glory. He is the greatest whose strength carries up the most hearts by the attraction of his own.”

Henry Ward Beecher (June 24, 1813 – March 8, 1887) was a prominent Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, abolitionist, and speaker in the mid to late 19th century. An 1875 adultery trial in which he was accused of having an affair with a married woman was one of the most notorious American trials of the 19th century.

By all accounts Mr Beecher was a very interesting man. Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle must of been a fan. In The Resident Patient, a Sherlock Holmes mystery, Holmes’ companion Dr. Watson is mentioned as being an avid admirer of Henry Ward Beecher, keeping a portrait of him (beside a portrait of General Gordon) and feeling strongly indignant about the way that Beecher was received during his visit to Britain at the time of the Civil War by “the more turbulent of our people”.

I had never come across him before so have been reading a bit more about his life.

“If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can totally transform one million realities.”

Maya Angelou (born Marguerite Ann Johnson; April 4, 1928) is an American author and poet. She has published six autobiographies, five books of essays, numerous books of poetry, and is credited with a long list of plays, movies, and television shows. She is one of the most decorated writers of her generation, with dozens of awards and over thirty honorary doctoral degrees. Angelou is best known for her series of autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences.

Maya Angelou’s long list of occupations has included pimp, prostitute, night-club dancer and performer, cast-member of the musical Porgy and Bess, coordinator for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, author and member of the Harlem Writers Guild, journalist in Egypt and Ghana during the days of decolonization, and actor, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs.  Since 1991, she has taught at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she holds the first lifetime Reynolds Professorship of American Studies.  She was active in the Civil Rights movement, and worked with both Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.  Since the 1990s she has made around eighty appearances a year on the lecture circuit, something she continued into her eighties.  In 1993, Angelou recited her poem “On the Pulse of Morning” at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration, the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration in 1961.

I was just trying to write a quick blog with a few quotes and now and wrapped up in learning more about these intersting people!

This quote did make me laugh!

“It’s a rather pleasant experience to be alone in a bank at night.”

Willie Sutton (June 30, 1901 – November 2, 1980) was a prolific U.S. bank robber. During his forty-year criminal career he stole an estimated $2 million, and eventually spent more than half of his adult life in prison. For his talent at executing robberies in disguises, he gained two nicknames, “Willie the Actor” and “Slick Willie.” Sutton is known, albeit apocryphally, for the urban legend that he said that he robbed banks “because that’s where the money is.”
